Ways to Back Up Your Data and Safely Store Files – Part 2

Now that you’ve learned the basics of backing up your files in part one, so you don’t need to recover them at a computer shop, here are some specific methods to do so:

Cloud

Backing up your computer to the cloud is a simple, low-cost solution for backing up large amounts of data. It helps get backup data offsite. Backing up to the cloud is a common use case that many backup services specialise in this type of service.

Some reliable cloud-backup services include Carbonite, Backblaze, SpiderOak and IDrive. Google Drive, Microsoft’s OneDrive, and Apple’s iCloud are other popular destinations for cloud backup.

Cloud backup services like Dropbox and Box can also be used as cloud file storage services. These services are less expensive than dedicated storage solutions and are easy to use. They may not automatically back up newly created files, but they can be set to synchronise the modifications made to existing files.

Many cloud backup services offer both free and paid services with varying levels of functionality. The free services often provide only a limited amount of storage space — usually about 5 GB — so they aren’t enough to back up photos, videos and other large files like music libraries. Paid services with unlimited storage space are reasonable — usually less than $6 per month.

Cloud backup offers many advantages. One is that you can access your files anywhere and even while travelling. Whether at your home office or taking an aeroplane to a faraway place, you can still touch base with your cloud files. Another is that your backed-up files are accessible whenever you need them, and they can be accessed using any computer — you don’t necessarily have to use a PC to access the files. In addition, backed-up files can be accessed using a phone or tablet.

System or Third-Party Application

One way to back up your data, whether on your computer’s hard drive or an external drive, is to use a backup application. This type of application will back up your data automatically at a preset time if you wish, or you can back up manually. Either way, the application specifies which files to back up and the backup destination. If the destination is an external drive, it must be connected for the backup to succeed.

To make backups of your computer, you can open Settings, then Update & Security. Choosing Backup reveals your options: you can back up files to OneDrive (you get 5 GB of storage for free) or to an external drive.

If you decide not to use the backup capabilities in the operating system, many backup applications are available that make it a set-it-and-forget-it process. Some applications with long track records include Acronis, EaseUs ToDo Backup, MSP360, and Paragon Backup & Recovery.

Say goodbye to computer shop file recovery afterwards.

Manual

Manually backing up your system means you use the Copy and Paste commands to copy folders and files to an external drive or cloud storage service. This method is speedy and free, but you have to remember to do it every week while ensuring that all the appropriate folders and files are copied because it’s manual. You’d have a hard time keeping track of that.

Moreover, this method doesn’t ensure that the appropriate folders and files are copied, making it possible for you to visit a computer shop for recovery.

Which Is Best?

Though it costs more, backing up files to the cloud is the best option. It allows viewing across multiple devices so you can access your files even with the computer in lousy condition. Yes, you pay a yearly subscription, but it is definitely worth the long-term peace than the short-term panic of losing your life’s work due to one bad computer day.
